How ASU calculates your GPA
- Each grade has a point value from the table below. ASU’s failing grade is E, worth 0.00.
- Grade points × the semester hours of the course gives the course’s honor points.
- All honor points added up, ÷ all hours that received one of those grades (net hours), is the GPA.
- The cumulative GPA is capped at 4.00, even though an A+ is worth 4.33.
Left out: W, X, Y and every other mark that is not a letter grade on the table. Those hours add nothing to honor points or net hours, so leave those courses out of the calculator.
ASU grade point values
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.33 |
| A | 4.00 |
| A− | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B− | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| D | 1.00 |
| E | 0.00 |
Notice what is missing: ASU’s plus/minus scale has no C−, D+ or D−. A generic 4.0 calculator that offers those grades, or rates an A+ as 4.0, gives a different number from the one on your ASU record.
Retaking a D or E: the old grade drops out
Under ASU policy SSM 203–06, an undergraduate who earns a D or E in an undergraduate course may repeat it once to earn a better grade. For students admitted fall 2008 or later, both grades stay on the transcript, but only the higher one counts in the cumulative GPA, for up to 12 repeated hours. Repeats beyond 12 hours fall under a different rule: the policy says the average course grade is included, so ask your advisor how yours will count.
In the table, set “Retake?” to the grade you are replacing (Was D or Was E). With your current GPA and hours entered, the calculator takes the old grade’s hours and points out of your record and puts the new grade in. If the retake goes worse, from a D to an E, the D stays and the E drops out.
Worked example: an E replaced by an ASU retake
A sophomore has a 3.10 ASU GPA on 45 hours, which is 139.50 honor points. That record includes an E in a 3-hour psychology course. This semester: English, 3 hours, A; Calculus, 4 hours, B+; Chemistry, 4 hours, A+; and the psychology course again, 3 hours, B.
Semester: 12.00 + 13.32 + 17.32 + 9.00 = 51.64 honor points on 14 hours, a 3.69. Cumulative: the old E leaves with its 3 hours, so 139.50 + 51.64 = 191.14 honor points on 42 + 14 = 56 hours, a 3.41. Counted the generic way, with the E still in, the same grades give 191.14 ÷ 59 = 3.24.
ASU’s own calculator and this one
The ASU registrar runs an official GPA calculator that starts from the total grade points and graded units on your academic record. Use it when you have those numbers open in My ASU. This page starts from the GPA you already know, keeps your courses on your device, gives you a share link, and works out the average you need next semester to reach a target GPA.
ASU GPA questions
Can an A+ raise your ASU GPA above 4.0?
An A+ is worth 4.33 points, so a semester of A+ grades can average above 4.00 and lifts a lower cumulative GPA faster than an A would. The cumulative GPA itself is capped at 4.00, the registrar states, so it never shows more than 4.00.
What happens to my GPA if I retake a class at ASU?
An undergraduate D or E in an undergraduate course may be repeated once. For students admitted fall 2008 or later, both grades stay on the transcript but only the higher one counts in the cumulative GPA, for up to 12 repeated hours. Mark the retake row with the grade it replaces.
Is there a C-, D+ or D- at ASU?
No. The registrar’s plus/minus scale runs A+ to C+ and C, then D and E. There is no C−, D+ or D−. E is ASU’s failing grade and counts 0.00 points, like an F at other schools.
Which ASU grades do not count in the GPA?
Only the letter grades on the registrar’s table, A+ through E, count. W, X, Y and other marks are left out, so those hours add nothing to honor points or net hours. Leave such courses out of the calculator.
What GPA do I need next semester to reach my goal?
Open Target GPA, enter the cumulative GPA you want and the hours you will take next. The calculator divides the honor points still missing by those hours. If the answer is above 4.33, the goal is out of reach in that many hours; spread it over more.
