How to calculate your middle school GPA
- Turn every class grade into points: A+ and A are 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, and so on down to F at 0 (table below). A percent becomes a letter first.
- Add up the points of all your classes.
- Divide by the number of classes. That is your GPA for the term.
A middle school check sheet like White Plains’ uses no credits: each class counts the same, full-year or not. If your school counts a half-year class as half, type 0.5 under Weight.
Worked example: six classes, a 2.73
This is the example from White Plains Public Schools’ middle school GPA check sheet: one A+, one A−, two B grades, one C− and one D.
Points: 4.0 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 1.7 + 1.0 = 16.4. Six classes, so 16.4 ÷ 6 = 2.733, which the calculator shows as 2.73. The A+ earns no more than an A: on a 4.0 scale nothing goes above 4.0.
Middle school grading scale: percent, letter and GPA points
| Letter | Plus-minus % | Whole letters % | GPA points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100 | 4.0 | |
| A | 93–96 | 90–100 | 4.0 |
| A− | 90–92 | 3.7 | |
| B+ | 87–89 | 3.3 | |
| B | 83–86 | 80–89 | 3.0 |
| B− | 80–82 | 2.7 | |
| C+ | 77–79 | 2.3 | |
| C | 73–76 | 70–79 | 2.0 |
| C− | 70–72 | 1.7 | |
| D+ | 67–69 | 1.3 | |
| D | 63–66 | 60–69 | 1.0 |
| D− | 60–62 | 0.7 | |
| F | below 60 | below 60 | 0.0 |
The two scales give different letters for the same percent. An 80% is a B− (2.7) on the plus-minus scale but a B (3.0) on whole letters. Pick the one your report card uses under “Percents and earlier terms”. White Plains’ check sheet has no D−; where a school gives one, it is worth 0.7.
No Honors weighting in middle school
The White Plains check sheet counts every course once and adds no extra point for advanced classes, so this calculator does the same. A high school course taken in 8th grade, such as Algebra I, is a different case: Howard County Public Schools in Maryland puts that grade on the high school transcript but leaves it out of the high school GPA. Your counselor knows your district’s rule.
Quarters, semesters and the whole year
Enter this term’s classes, then put your GPA from earlier terms and the number of classes behind it under “Earlier GPA” and “Classes in it”. The calculator adds both sides by class: a 3.50 first quarter on six classes is 21.0 points; with this quarter’s 16.4 on six classes, the year so far is 37.4 ÷ 12 = 3.12.
Middle school GPA questions
What is considered a 4.0 GPA in middle school?
A 4.0 means an A in every class on the unweighted 4.0 scale; an A+ also counts as 4.0. On a plus-minus scale that is 93% or higher in each class, on a whole-letter scale 90% or higher. One A− (3.7) among six classes makes it a 3.95.
Is an 80% a 3.0 GPA?
On a whole-letter scale, yes: 80–89% is a B, worth 3.0. On a plus-minus scale 80% is a B−, worth 2.7, and a B (3.0) starts at 83%. Your report card shows which scale your school uses; switch the calculator to match.
Is a 2.5 GPA bad in middle school?
A 2.5 is an average between C+ (2.3) and B− (2.7) across your classes, so mostly C and B grades. Raising one C to a B in six classes adds about 0.17. In White Plains, for example, middle school grades do not go into the high school GPA.
Will one B ruin a 4.0 GPA?
It ends the perfect 4.0, but not by much. With six classes, five A grades and one B give (5 × 4.0 + 3.0) ÷ 6 = 3.83. With seven classes the same B gives a 3.86. Earlier terms with straight A grades soften it further.
Does my middle school GPA count in high school?
Often not. White Plains Public Schools tells its middle school students that their grades will not calculate into the high school GPA. Some high schools or programs still look at middle school grades for placement, so ask your counselor.
