How to enter your grades
One grade per box: a percent (92), points (45/50) or, on a keyboard, a letter (B+). To average a whole column at once, copy it from a spreadsheet or your school portal and paste it into the first box. Each value gets its own row, whether they were split by new lines, tabs, commas or spaces. Empty boxes are skipped, so you can leave a row for the next test.
Example: four tests and one still to come
Your tests so far are 88, 92, 76 and 84. Add them and divide by four:
(88 + 92 + 76 + 84) ÷ 4 = 340 ÷ 4 = 85%
That is a B on the standard scale. With one more test to come, an 87 average needs 87 × 5 − 340 = 95 on it. A 90 would need 110, so it is out of reach with one test, but not with three: (90 × 7 − 340) ÷ 3 = 96.67 on each. Type the goal and the number of tests left under the result and the calculator does this for you.
Each grade the same, or every point the same
Take three scores: 9/10 on a quiz, 40/50 on a lab and 60/100 on a test. Counted as equal grades, the percents are 90, 80 and 60, and their average is 76.67%, a C. Added up as points, it is 109 of 160, only 68.13%, a D, because the 100-point test carries ten times the weight of the quiz. Your syllabus says which way your class counts. If it gives categories a percent, like tests 50% and homework 30%, use the weighted grade calculator instead.
From an average to the final and your GPA
Use in final grade calculator opens the final grade calculator with this average as your current grade, so you can see what the final exam has to bring for each letter. Add to my GPA puts the letter into the GPA calculator. Teachers averaging a stack of quizzes for one student can grade each quiz on the grading calculator first and paste the percents here.
Average grade questions
How do you calculate an average grade?
Add the grades and divide by how many there are. 88 + 92 + 76 + 84 = 340, and 340 ÷ 4 = 85, a B on the standard 90/80/70/60 scale.
How do I average letter grades?
Turn each letter into a percent first. This calculator counts a letter as the middle of its band: A = 95, B = 85, C = 75 on the standard scale, B+ = 88.5. For an F, type the percent, because an F has no useful middle.
Should I average the percents or add up the points?
Ask how your teacher grades. If every assignment counts the same, average the percents. If the class adds up points, add the points: a 100-point test then counts ten times as much as a 10-point quiz. Switch to "Add up points" for that.
What do I need on my next test to raise my average?
Multiply the average you want by the number of tests including the next one, then subtract the total you already have. Four tests averaging 85 make 340; for an 87 after five tests you need 87 × 5 − 340 = 95.
Is an average grade the same as a GPA?
No. An average grade is a percent for one class or one set of tests. A GPA averages grade points (A = 4.0) across classes, usually weighted by credits. "Add to my GPA" carries the letter of this average over to the GPA calculator.
Letters and where the scale comes from
The letter next to the average uses the standard 90/80/70/60 scale or the plus-minus scale (A from 93, A− 90, B+ 87 …), both on the grading scale page with the school policies they come from. A letter typed as a grade counts as the middle of its band, A = 95 and B = 85 on the standard scale. For an F, type the percent.
