How UT Austin calculates your GPA
- Each letter grade has a fixed number of grade points, from 4.00 for an A down to 0.00 for an F (table below).
- Grade points × the semester hours of the course gives the points that course adds.
- All points added up, ÷ all hours that received a letter grade, is the GPA.
The official number is the cumulative University GPA, which the registrar calculates from all your work at UT Austin with a letter grade, including credit by exam, correspondence and extension courses graded that way. Courses recorded with I, Q, W, X, S, U or CR are left out, so leave them out of the calculator too.
UT Austin grade point values
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.00 |
| A− | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B− | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C− | 1.67 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 |
| D− | 0.67 |
| F | 0.00 |
Two things differ from many other schools. There is no A+, so 4.00 is the ceiling for every semester, not only for the cumulative. And the minus grades go all the way down: C−, D+ and D− each have their own value, so a C− (1.67) costs you a third of a point against a C.
Retaking a course: both grades stay in
Many universities drop the old grade when you repeat a course. UT Austin does not. If you repeat a course and have two or more grades, all grades and all semester hours count in your University GPA; the official grade for the course is the last one. A retake therefore helps, but only by adding a better grade next to the old one.
In the calculator, enter the retake as one more row and keep the old grade inside the current GPA you typed in. Before you plan a retake, check your college: McCombs, Moody, Cockrell, Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, Nursing and Pharmacy students may not repeat for credit a course they passed with C− or better.
Worked example: a UT retake where the old D still counts
A sophomore has a 3.20 UT GPA on 45 hours, which is 144.00 grade points. That record includes a D in a 3-hour psychology course. This semester: English, 3 hours, A; Calculus, 4 hours, B+; Chemistry, 4 hours, A−; and the psychology course again, 3 hours, B.
Semester: 12.00 + 13.32 + 14.68 + 9.00 = 49.00 grade points on 14 hours, a 3.50. Cumulative: the D stays, so 144.00 + 49.00 = 193.00 points on 45 + 14 = 59 hours, a 3.27. A calculator that replaces the old grade would take the D’s 3 hours and 3.00 points out and show 190.00 ÷ 56 = 3.39, a number your UT record will not show.
Graduate students
The graduate GPA uses the same grade points but different courses: upper-division and graduate courses taken while enrolled in Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, without credit by exam or work from other institutions. This page is built for the undergraduate cumulative University GPA.
UT GPA questions
Is there an A+ at UT Austin?
No. The catalog’s scale starts at A, worth 4.00, then A− at 3.67, so a UT GPA can never go above 4.00. If another calculator offers an A+ at 4.33, its answer will not match your UT record.
Does retaking a class replace the old grade at UT?
No. When you repeat a course, all grades and all hours count in the University GPA; the last grade is the official one for the course. Enter the retake as a new row. Several colleges, including McCombs, Cockrell and Natural Sciences, do not let you repeat for credit a course passed with C− or better.
Do pass/fail and credit by exam count in my UT GPA?
No. Courses recorded with CR, S, U, I, Q, W or X are left out. Since September 15, 2006 UT records credit by exam as CR, so it adds nothing to your GPA. Leave those courses out of the calculator.
What GPA do UT Austin undergraduates need to keep?
At least a 2.00 cumulative University GPA to maintain satisfactory progress toward a degree, the catalog says. The calculator warns you when your cumulative result falls below 2.00.
Do transfer grades count in my UT GPA?
The catalog defines the cumulative University GPA as the work you undertook at UT Austin with a letter grade, including credit by exam, correspondence and extension. Courses from other colleges are not part of it, so enter only your UT courses.
