How UF calculates your GPA
- Each grade has a fixed grade value, from 4.0 for an A down to 0 for an E (table below).
- Grade value × the credits of the course gives the grade points that course adds.
- All grade points added up, ÷ all credits carried, is the GPA.
- The result is shown to the hundredths place and not rounded up: 3.248 is a 3.24.
Only UF courses count. Grades you earned at other institutions are not averaged with your UF grades, and S/U courses are left out, so leave both out of the calculator too.
UF grade point values
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| A− | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B− | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C− | 1.67 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D− | .67 |
| E, WF, I, NG | 0, counted |
| S, U, W, H, I*, N* | no points, left out |
Credit earned before May 11, 2009 used an older scale without minus grades: A 4.0, B+ 3.5, B 3.0, C+ 2.5, C 2.0, D+ 1.5, D 1.0. Those values are already inside the UF GPA on your record, so type that GPA as your current GPA and enter only newer courses as rows.
Cut, not rounded: why a 2.9995 is a 2.99
Most calculators round. UF does not: the catalog shows a 3.248 as a 3.24. The difference is at most a hundredth, but it decides whether you clear a line such as a 3.00 for a program or a scholarship. The calculator cuts every GPA it shows the same way, and the target line rounds the average you need up, so reaching it really gets you there.
Repeating a course: every grade stays in
UF counts repeated coursework in your GPA as many times as grades are recorded; the credit is awarded only once. A retake helps by adding a better grade next to the old one, not by replacing it. Once you have a C (2.0) or better in a course, you may not repeat it unless your college approves a petition. In the calculator, keep the old grade inside the current GPA you typed in and enter the repeat as one more row.
Worked example: a UF repeat after an E
A sophomore has a 2.90 UF GPA on 30 credits, which is 87.00 grade points. That record includes an E in a 3-credit course. This semester: the repeated course, 3 credits, B+; Calculus, 4 credits, A; Chemistry, 3 credits, B; English, 3 credits, C+.
Semester: 9.99 + 16.00 + 9.00 + 6.99 = 41.98 grade points on 13 credits, 3.2292, which UF shows as 3.22. Cumulative: the E stays, so 87.00 + 41.98 = 128.98 points on 30 + 13 = 43 credits, 2.9995, which UF shows as 2.99, not 3.00. A calculator that rounds would show 3.00, and one that also drops the E would show 128.98 ÷ 40 = 3.22: two numbers your UF record will not show.
Graduate students
The graduate GPA follows the UF Graduate Catalog, not the undergraduate one. The 2025–26 Graduate Catalog uses all letter-graded courses eligible toward the graduate degree except 1000- and 2000-level courses, and graduate students need an overall GPA of 3.00, truncated. This page is built for the undergraduate UF GPA only.
UF GPA questions
Does UF round your GPA?
No. The catalog says the GPA is displayed to the hundredths place and not rounded up, so a 3.248 shows as 3.24. A 2.9995 is a 2.99, not a 3.00. The calculator cuts its results the same way.
Is there an A+ at the University of Florida?
No. UF's scale starts at A, worth 4.0, then A− at 3.67, so a UF GPA cannot go above 4.00. A calculator that offers an A+ at 4.33 will not match your UF record.
Does retaking a class at UF replace the old grade?
No. Repeated UF coursework counts in the GPA as many times as grades are recorded; the credit is awarded once. After a C (2.0) or better you may not repeat the course without an approved petition to your college.
What is an E grade at UF?
E is UF's failing grade: zero grade points, counted in the GPA. WF, and an I or NG that is final, count the same way. An I* or N* is left out in its first term but becomes a failing grade if unchanged after 150 days.
Do S/U, W and transfer grades count in my UF GPA?
No. S and U carry no grade points and are left out, as are W and H. Grades from other institutions are not averaged with UF grades, so enter only your UF courses.
